Billy's best friend, Tommy, is moving with his family and the house across the way stands empty.

He stares out the window and wonders if there will be someone new moving into the house soon and what they will be like.

Maybe the father will be a fireman and take them on a ride on his hook-and-ladder. Or maybe a policeman, riding them in the squadcar with the siren blaring loud.

He imagines all the wonderful things the parents will do and the adventures he and his new friend will have but the most important thing, more then all the glamor and excitement of what the parents might do, he wants a new friend to play with and create their own adventures.
